Foot-and-inch disease

New Zealand has officially been metric since the 1970s, but even the youth seems to struggle with some metric units, let alone the older generation. The young adults I met had troubles grasping the height or assessing the dimensions when quoted in centimeters, and preferred to use inches, feet and yards.

Not only that. Length is also excessively quoted in 'mils' - i.e., millimeters - even outside technical jargon. Meaning they seem not to be able to judge when the use of centimeters is warranted. The same (or similar) applies to weight (kg vs pounds/stones) and, to a lesser extent, distance (miles).

Maybe NZ has not had a single case of foot and mouth disease but it sure has a foot and inch infection.
